Messages from Mrs Inglis

Hello everyone,

As you are reading this, I have just returned from being at camp with the grade 5 students.  All students and staff were having a fantastic time. How wonderful to be able to provide these opportunities and experiences for our students.  I am very appreciative of the amazing parent helpers and staff that we have, that left their families and lives for three days for our students. We have grade 3 and 4 camp next – so a big thank you to all the parents helpers and staff.

Last week our staff received their Professional Practice day.  In the past, staff were able to be released onsite to receive their entitlement but as we have a staff shortage of available casual relief teachers across the State, the Department of Education and Training has allowed us to take a common day.  Thank you for your support.

On this day the staff undertake many tasks such as:

  • Working with the Victorian curriculum to plan learning sequences for the cohort,
  • Reviewing assessments and student work to determine what students know and where they need to go next with their learning.
  • Consulting current research and initiatives to determine what practices will support our students to obtain new knowledge, concepts and skills.
  • Planning engaging tasks and experiences to ‘hook’ our students into the learning.
  • Administration tasks such as entering data, camps, excursions, transitions, etc.
  • Professional learning that is required as part of our role – child safe standards, mandatory reporting

At Beaconsfield Primary School, these days are so valuable to ensure we are supporting all our staff to ensure that they are working on their practice and craft of the teaching and learning of our young people.

Child safety and wellbeing at Beaconsfield Priamry School: information for families and the school community

The Victorian Government has announced new Child Safe Standards to further strengthen child safety across organisations, including schools. The new standards recognise the critical importance of families and the broader school community in maintaining and promoting child safety and wellbeing.

Beaconsfield Primary School is committed to providing a child safe and child friendly environment, where students are safe and feel safe.

Beaconsfield Primary School has reviewed and updated our child safety policies and procedures to ensure they meet the requirements of the new standards. These are available to view on our school’s website (beaconsfield.vic.edu.au) and at the school’s front office.

We are committed to continuous improvement in our approach to child safety and wellbeing and have worked with members of our school community such as school council, students and staff on ways we can further strengthen our child safety policies, procedures and practices.

Our child safety and wellbeing policies outline the measures and strategies we have in place to support, promote and maintain the safety and wellbeing of our students:

  • Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
  • Child Safety Code of Conduct
  • Child safety Responding and Reporting Obligations Policy and Procedure
  • Student Wellbeing and Engagement Policy
  • Bullying Prevention Policy
  • Volunteers Policy
  • Digital Learning Policy

If you have any comments or questions, please contact myself, Linda Amos or Tyson Buckingham.

Please note, one of our safe guards we have for volunteers or parent helpers at our school is to ensure that they have a Working With Children’s Check registered to our school. If you think that you may like to help out, please ensure that you have completed this procedure as it can take time. Feel free to contact the office if you have any questions.

Buildings and Grounds

I thought I would just give an update on what is happening around our grounds.  We are always looking at ways to improve our grounds and maintain them.

  • The bike shed now has a concrete floor and bike and scooter racks are on their way.
  • Seating at ‘Kiss’n’Go’ for students and parents as they wait at the end of the day.
  • New garden beds near the gym – let’s hope our students stay out of them as they are establishing.

Still to come:

  • A rubber surface at the pirate ship – we are waiting for dry weather for it to be laid.
  • Retaining walls with seating around our junior and senior playground – to keep mulch off the paths and provide seating.
  • Widening the concrete path at the grade 5 portables.
  • A new playground alongside what we call ‘the driveway’ – across from the gym.  We have put forward the students’ recommendations and we have two playground companies putting together designs.

Book Week

Well done to all the students who came to school on Thursday dressed as a character from a story.  The wind challenged us in the morning – costumes being blown away, but it just added to the fun of the day.  Whilst some students are a bit anxious for dressing up, hopefully everyone loved being part of it and seeing all the creative costumes.

In the classroom, there were lots of activities to promote reading and exposing students to the world of literature.  The leaders of our school (principals and school captains) read a story to the school that we hoped everyone enjoyed – ‘Danny in the Toybox’.  This was a fun activity to be part of and one that you could do at home with your family.  Record yourselves reading a story and send it to family and friends to listen to.  The activity did require that we could read the story but also practices our fluency – reading the story at an appropriate rate and using expression.

Thank you to the families that donated to MS Read-a-thon.  We appreciate your support.

Splash and Dash

Thank you to everyone who has donated already to this fun event.  The date is Friday 9th September.  On this day, families are invited to come onsite to help us ‘wet’ our students when they are doing the ‘Splash and Dash’.  Please join us on the oval when your child’s school house is participating in this event.  The times that you can join us are as follow:

  • Morgan – 9:10 – 10am
  • Lohan – 10 – 10:50am
  • Rankin – 11:45am – 12:35pm
  • Cooper – 12:35 – 1:25pm

Students can wear their house colours on the day.  When they participate in the ‘Splash and Dash’ rotation, students are encouraged to change into a white t-shirt so that by the time they have finished their shirt will be colourful.  Please send your child to school with a towel and bag to place their wet clothes in.

We will have water guns for parents to use but if you have a reliable water gun at home, feel free to bring it.  We only have a limited supply and we found last time, some water guns stopped working as the day went along.

Have a great weekend.

Messages from Mrs Inglis

Hello everyone,

I hope you are having a lovely week.  I know we have lots of people away this week, so rest up and take care of yourself and your family.

We have a student-free day on Monday for the teachers to receive their Professional Practice Day.  Hopefully this gives all our students an opportunity to get over any illnesses, as we have camps and excursions fast approaching and we hope people do not have to miss out due to illness.

We also have our final Curriculum Day date for 2022.  We will be holding a Curriculum Day in Term 4 on Friday 28th October.  Mark it in your calendar.

Book Week and MS Readathon fundraiser

I hope you have been able to come up with an outfit for your child for Book Week on Thursday 18th.  This is a fun day when we all come to school dressed up and promote reading.  This year’s theme is ‘Dreaming with eyes open’.  We are using this week to celebrate and encourage all our students to engage in reading.  SRC are raising funds for MS Readathon and our wonderful Visual Art captains have made bookmarks for our students.

At Beacy, we love all our students to be able to and enjoy reading.  We know that we can read for pleasure and open up our world to great ideas.  We also know that we can read to learn about new concepts and topics.  As a parent, you can support your child’s success and engagement in reading by:

  • Increasing their knowledge so they can make connections: As a family, go out and explore our world and learn new things – visit zoos, museums, parks, experiences such as cooking, camping.  These opportunities help students to make connections to when they are reading.
  • Increase oral language and vocabulary: have lots of talking happening in your family and try introducing new words to increase your child’s bank of known words.  If we say the word, we can read the word and then we can write the word.
  • Model good reading practices – for pleasure, for obtaining information.
  • Help them to decode – sounding out, using visual or context clues, breaking the word up.
  • Help them to comprehend what they have read – what is happening, what is the main idea, why do you think the character did that, what could happen next?

Human Powered Vehicle (HPV)

A couple of weekends ago, our HPV team were able to hit the track again, after a couple years of cancelled events.  Here is a recount from Erin (grade 5 student) and results from Mr Cole.  Thank you to our staff and parents for helping out on the day.

Casey Fields race HPV

On Saturday 30th July, Beaconsfield Primary School went to Casey Fields to compete against other schools in human powered vehicle (HPV)

The race was run by Blackburn Cycling Club, the race went for six hours and started at 10am and ended at 4pm. This event was great fun.

We took two cars, Storm and Ironman to the event to represent Beaconsfield Primary School.

Each rider was in the car for 20min and rotated to the next rider for their 20min ride and we were recorded for each lap we did on the score sheet.

We had to help the driver changes in the pits and cheering our team along.

There was a couple of crashes/flat tires/chains broken which added to the excitement for the day.

Beaconsfield Primary School had a great team and heaps of fun for the day, lots of parents came to support the teams.

Casey Fields race report – Saturday 30th July

Congratulations to all the riders who participated in the Blackburn Cycling CLub 6 hour Human Powered Vehicle race held at Casey Fields on Saturday 30th of July. This was Beaconsfield Primary Schools first endurance race since 2019 making this a very new experience for almost all of our riders.

Thank you to all the parents and friends who made it possible for everyone to ride. Jobs included setting up and packing up the pits, time keeping, rider changes in the pits, track marshalling and any of the many little things that makes the day run more smoothly.

The Storm team consisted of Eleanor C, Elyssa T, Max M, Joshua M, Harry S and Mathjis C and they completed 51 laps.

The Ironman team was made up of Erin S, Emma C, Nate C, Leo T and Kristian D and they completed 38 laps.

Splash and Dash

Thank you to all the families that have already raised money for our school on the online platform.

The Splash and Dash Day is Friday 9th September.  This is a fun day where we come together as a whole school to participate in activities around the school – one of which is a fun run where students get wet!  More information about how the day will look and how parents can join in will come out soon.

New experiences

I thought I would just take a moment to talk about how we can support our students when experiencing something new.  Many of our students will be attending camp or an excursion soon and for most, this will be the first time for this experience.  Some students might be stressed or anxious about this event.  This is a normal emotion and it is important that we do not let these feelings stop us from participating.  We need to work through these feelings.  Some strategies that you can do to support your child:

  • Show empathy that you can see that they are nervous, stressed or anxious.  Telling someone who is feeling this way not to worry about it, does not help.  They want to be acknowledged that they are feeling this way and you understand.
  • Talk to them about what it is that they are worried about – sometimes they might not know.  It could be something that we negotiate about how it could look or work.
  • If their worry is something that they cannot control or change, then talk about strategies about how they can get through it.  They might have a friend with them, bring something or wear something that makes them feel better.  Sometimes just talking about it out loud and knowing that someone knows how you are feeling, can help lessen the stress.
  • Talk to them about what is happening in their body when they are stressed or anxious.  Their body thinks they are in danger and moving blood and adrenaline around, ready to fight, flight or freeze.  This is why we sometime feel like we have a sore tummy.
  • Encourage them to take slow and deep breathes.  This tells our body that we are not in danger and slows our heart rate down.  There are lots of different ways to encourage breathing and great apps and Youtube clips online to encourage us to slow it down.

There is lots of information around about anxiety and supporting children.  We have articles on our Newsletter Blog that can support you or speak to your child’s teacher and we can send home some resources.  You can also speak to your doctor for resources and support.  Whilst these are all normal emotions that many of us experience as different levels, if these emotions are stopping us from participating in events or experiences then we need to seek additional supports and interventions.

Prep Transition 2023

Our Prep Transition program has begun.  This week we saw two of our local early childhood settings come and visit our school.  It is very exciting meeting our kinder friends and we had lots of siblings coming along.

We have filled all of our places for next year and have a begun a waiting list.  If you know of anyone who would like to come to Prep for next year, I suggest that they contact us quickly.

We will be holding Parent-Teacher interviews in the second last week of term on Zoom.  Information about booking will come out next week.

Enjoy the extra long weekend.
